Klay Kathaa Ceramics By Bhusari P

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a self-taught ceramic artist, passionately experimenting with various techniques to create sculptures, relief work, and glazed functional ware. The human form intrigues me, and I find immense joy in sculpting the diverse emotions of childhood and the facets of urban landscapes. My work delves into the relationship between nature and humans, exploring how they continuously connect and influence each other through ceramics.

My ceramic work is inspired by the relationship between constant change and the repetitive patterns found in nature. Some pieces are vessels, while others are purely contemplative. I primarily work with high and medium temperature clay, with extensive experience in wheel-thrown and altered forms. My sculptures reflect my fascination with the interplay between nature and humanity, capturing the essence of this connection.

My functional ceramic pieces are rooted in simplicity and refined imperfection, designed to evoke a sense of happiness and comfort. I hope that those who engage with my work find that the everyday use of these pots transforms their routines into something special. What began as a stepping stone towards self-discovery has grown into a profound passion. Form and color in ceramics provide me with a rich vocabulary for self-expression, allowing me to explore and convey my artistic vision.

What I DO

I feel I have developed a relation of deeper cohesion with clay. The more I understand clay, the more I understand myself. Clay is very forgiving yet a very tough taskmaster. The process of its creation, its visual appeal, and its final ordeal through fire makes ceramics an appealing and rewarding medium for the pursuant of the art. It started for me as one of the steppingstones towards self-discovery and soon grew into a passion. I derive inspiration and joy of creation from it. Every time I have clay in my hands, I feel more inconsequential, a mere speck in the infinite universe. It helps me feel nothingness and allows me to open myself completely towards learning about this humble medium. I realized soon that your own imagination is your only constraint and your only inspiration – it’s similar to the beauty and burden dichotomy of life.

However, such is the power of this medium that both form and color in ceramics have given me a great vocabulary for selfexpression. I like to keep the colors very close to natural elements. ‘God is in the detail’- each sculpture or a functional piece I make is a labor of love.

ABOUT KLAY KATHAA

Welcome to Klay Kathaa Handmade Ceramics Since 2013, I have been telling stories through ceramic art pieces inspired by the people and places around me. My creations are designed for both day-to-day use and decoration in contemporary homes. “God is in the detail.” Each sculpture or functional piece I make is a labor of love, reflecting my deep connection to the inspirations from my surroundings. These pieces are unique and each has its own story to tell, crafted with great care and attention to detail. I strive to keep the colors close to natural elements, adding to their distinctiveness. The beauty of handmade ceramics lies in their individuality; no two pieces are ever the same, even if they share the same form. Your support for my one-woman business is greatly appreciated. I hope you enjoy your visit to my store.
A SNEAK PEAK IN MY JOURNEY – FROM ALGORITHMS TO ART-FORMS! I am a computer engineer by professional training. I have had a career in IT sector spanning a decade and a half across multiple MNCs. While I clicked away my time coding and trying to create magic in the matrix of unknowns and tangibles, art continued to fascinate me. Creativity reflected through my subconscious, but I never attentive enough to this intrinsic urge of mine and continually kept denying myself the experience and joy of immersing myself in the field of art. After a while, with many back bending years in my corporate cubicle, I took up pottery as a hobby; to explore my world inside out again. My ceramics journey started with awe of the craft and mostly with joy of being able to create, what has been a milestone invention in human evolution. For more than 10 years, I have been working with clay, out of which the last 5 years have been high speed for me in starting my journey towards sculpture work. I initially started with simple pottery and utilitarian forms and moving to a city like Kolkata was a complete gamechanger for me. Here, I delved more towards the creative elements. I learnt making Terra-cotta murals and sculptures and then moved to high temperature stoneware work. I slowly realised that my work was getting better and demanded more technique and drawing skills. Having no fine-arts background this was becoming challenging and frustrating. I decided to take up formal training in fine arts, to sketch and understand color and design. I think I found the joy of my life in the city of joy!

WHAT IS KLAY KATHAA

‘Kathaa’ in Hindi means a story. Well, Klay is a satiric misspelling for clay. (That way its attractive and sounds well, or at least so I hope!). This name has been on my mind since the time I started working in clay. Since 2013, I have been telling stories through ceramic pieces inspired by my ecosystem around me. My work comprises creations for day-to-day usage and decoration in contemporary homes. I want to weave a story around people’s life, with an element of me and the clay that comes with it. And hence the name Klay Kathaa! Currently, Klay Kathaa is a one-woman ceramic endeavour. I’m a full-time ceramic artist now and ramping up my online presence. If art and labour inspire you, come along, and be a part of my journey.
What is the ‘kathaa’ behind my logo?

‘It’s the circle of life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
‘Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle
The circle of life’
Moulding a lump of clay always gives me a gentle reminder of the circle of life. A cup made on the wheel; fired to be used and then broken to be back into mud one day. Clay symbolises eternity for me- like its always going to be there and in all that eternity you get to tell your story. The logo tries to encapsulate this simplistic essence of life.

1.What clay bodies do we use?
